The Galactic Core refers to the dense, star-cloud at the center of the galaxy. It is approximately 7000 light years in diameter and its nucleus is nearly 30,000 light years from Known Space. It was discovered by the Puppeteers to be undergoing a cataclysmic explosion, caused by a chain reaction of supernovae, sending out waves of deadly radiation that will engulf Known Space in approximately 20,000 years.

- The Galactic Core is the region of space surrounding the black hole cluster of Balcora. Not much has been stated about the core, although it is known that Hiigara lived in the Inner Rim, from where the core could be seen. The Kushan had to pass through the core to reach their homeworld and presumably entered it in several places during the Vaygr War.
- The center of the galaxy.
- In Star Trek V, the Enterprise supposedly travels to the "Center of the Galaxy" and in a short amount of time; much less time than is usually indicated by warp speeds. Trektards try to use this one incident to say all the other warp speeds are clearly too low. The problem is that what is depicted in the film is nothing like what the actual core of the Milky Way galaxy is theorized to be like. The real galactic core is theorized to contain massive black holes, and nothing of the sort was seen in the film.
- The galactic core contains the highest concentration and is thus the center of the galaxy. It sometimes contains a black hole.
- In 2269, the USS Enterprise, while on a scientific mission to find the creation point in the galactic core, found an entrance to an alternate universe where magic replaced science. (TAS: "The Magicks of Megas-Tu") The magnetic organism planned to use the Enterprise to head for the galactic core in the hopes of taking over the galaxy. (TAS: "Beyond the Farthest Star") A planet believed to be the mythological planet of Sha Ka Ree was discovered in the galactic core in 2287 by the Vulcan Sybok on board the USS Enterprise-A. (Star Trek V: The Final Frontier) During the Federation-Cardassian War, Cardassian Central Command claimed a Federation stellar cartography map was in error, due to a miscalibration by a reference beacon. They maintained that the Federation-Cardassian border in several sectors should be adjusted 4.7 light years to the galactic center. (TNG-R: "Chain of Command, Part II" ) In 2367, the USS Enterprise-D was temporarily transferred near the center of the galaxy by Lieutenant Barclay, where an intelligent species known as the Cytherians was discovered. (TNG: "The Nth Degree" ) An image of the galactic core was among the stellar images found in the astrometrics lab on board USS Voyager in 2377. (VOY: "Imperfection") Later, that year, the galactic core was seen on the map "USS Voyager Flight Path". According to this map, the portion of the core located in the Alpha Quadrant had been explored by manned and unmanned probes. (Star Trek: Voyager, Season 7 set artwork [1])
