Strauss was a German composer of the late Romantic and early modern eras known especially for his operas, lieder and tone poems. He was also a prominent conductor, replacing Hans von Bulow at Meiningen when von Bulow resigned in 1885. The composer, who began writing music at the age of six, was the son of Franz Strauss, principal horn at the Court Opera in Munich.
