Ion Antonescu (15 June 1882 – 1 June 1946) was the Conducător (leader) and prime minister of Romania for most of World War II, after leading the overthrow of Carol II in 1940. He nominally was co-head of state with King Michael, but most of the actual power rested with Antonescu. A firm anti-Semite, Antonescu independently implemented policies, based on the Nazi model, that were responsible for the deaths of some 40,000 Jews. Under Antonescu, Romania entered the War on the side of the Axis. He survived one coup attempt by the Iron Guard party, a like-minded politicial rival whom Antonescu smashed with the aid of Germany. Antonescu allocated troops for the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941.

- During the Second World War, he presided over two successive military dictatorships and allied Romania with Nazi Germany. This close alliance lasted until the 23rd August 1944, when he was deposed in a coup and later tried, convicted and executed by the communist regime in 1946. Many Romanians now see Antonescu as a hero who was doing what was best for Romania. However, any achievements were washed away by his involvement in the Holocaust and the massacres he ordered.
- During the war Ion's administration supplied more aid to the Axis powers then anyother member of the alliance. During his rule, 300,000 Romanian Jews where either deported, or killed. Ion however did prevent the death of Jews who where part of the old families of Romania, in order to keep the nations economy in good order. Ion was eventually overthrown by Micheal I when Romania faced Communist Revolt.

Ion was eventually overthrown by Micheal I when Romania faced Communist Revolt. When the soviets gained influence, Micheal handed Ion over to soviet athorities who put him on trail for war crimes, and found him guilty. Ion was executed on June 1, 1946. Many Romanian nationalist where appauled that their hero had been judged so, and pointed out the unfair nature of the trail. Ion's case was latter re-examined by an international review, which found the proceeding unjust, but the outcome true in it's judgement.

Antonescu allocated troops for the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. When the tide turned against the Axis, Antonescu attempted to reach a peace with the Allied Forces in 1944, but was instead successfully toppled by a coalition led by King Michael. He was tried in 1946 for war crimes, convicted, and executed.

Many Romanians now see Antonescu as a hero who was doing what was best for Romania. However, any achievements were washed away by his involvement in the Holocaust and the massacres he ordered. Attemps at rehabilitation have been fruitless, mainly because many have involved either anti-semitism or have ignored important historical aspects.
