Montine was a friend of Olivia Corey who owned an art gallery. Montine was apparently arriving in Collinsport from Quebec, on Olivia's recommendation, to see a Charles Delaware Tate landscape of an Indian Hill, as owned by Julia Hoffman with the hope of featuring the picture in an upcoming exhibition (909). It's highly likely that Montine didn't in fact exist and was simply a ruse on Olivia's part to get closer to the painting which she hoped concealed a portrait of Quentin Collins on a hidden layer underneath.
