The former passenger liner SS Alcantara was taken over by the Royal Navy in 1915 to serve as an auxiliary cruiser. As a part of the 10th Cruiser Squadron, she is one of the armed merchant cruisers which are enforcing the blockade against Germany by closing the entrance of the North Sea to German merchant shipping. With three similar ships, she is forming the Alcantara class.
