The film was conceived by writers Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski when they were students at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. It was originally in development at Columbia Pictures, but the studio put the film in 'turnaround' over Burton's decision to shoot in black-and-white. It was taken to Walt Disney Pictures, who released the film under their Touchstone Pictures banner.
- If players try to talk to him, he will refuse to talk but say one of a few phrases, such as:
* "Can't stop. Too busy."
* "This work isn't going to do itself."
* "Wonder when I'll get paid."
* "Is it lunch break yet?"
* "Ouch! That was my finger!"
* "Hey I'm working here. I'm working here." Digsite workmen will regularly arrive to take planks from the pile of long planks he's chopped and tell him to keep it up, to which he'll respond rarely with "I'll be charging overtime, then!"

- Ed Wood is a biographical film, which Tim Burton intended as a "tribute to the director with the worst reputation in Hollywood". Ed Wood is arguably most famous for his sci-fi film Plan 9 from Outer Space, in which noted horror film actor Bela Lugosi died during production.
- Edward Davis "Ed" Wood, Jr. (October 10, 1924 — December 10, 1978) was an American screenwriter, director, producer, actor, author and film editor. In the 1950s, Wood made a number of low-budget science fiction, horror and cowboy genre films, intercutting stock footage. In the 1960s and 1970s, he made sexploitation movies and wrote over 80 pulp crime, horror and sex novels. In 1980, he was posthumously awarded a Golden Turkey Award as Worst Director of All Time, renewing public interest in his work. Wood's career and camp approach has earned him and his films a cult following.
- Wood was created in 1924 in good ol' Poughkeepsie, New York. His father, Timothy Burtoni, was a scientist and part-time magician; his mother, Lillian Wood, was a fashion designer of Romanian descent. At a young age, Ed's mom would forcibly dress him up in girly clothing, such as dresses, skirts, stockings, lingerie, bikinis, angora sweaters, pajamas, and gloves, because she had always wanted a daughter. Little Ed was traumatized, horrified, and sickened... but curious; it is often theorized that this is why he grew up to become a totally heterosexual cross-dressing transylvanian.
- The film was conceived by writers Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski when they were students at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. Irritated at being thought of solely as writers for family films with their work on Problem Child and its sequel, Alexander and Karaszewski struck a deal with Burton and Denise Di Novi to produce the Ed Wood biopic, and Michael Lehmann as director. Due to scheduling conflicts with Airheads, Lehmann had to vacate the director's position, which was taken over by Burton.
