Hyronalin was a drug used to treat radiation poisoning, used during the 23rd and 24th centuries. It had been a standard treatment for radiation poisoning since the late 2100s. (TOS episode: "The Deadly Years", ST website: Startrek.com) Hyronalin can be derived from the exoskeleton of the Alverian dung beetle. (ST reference: Creatures) A hyronalin derivative was used by Federation sociological observers on planet NGC 667 due to the degree of naturally occuring radiation on that world. (TOS short story: "First, Do No Harm")

  • Hyronalin was a medicinal drug used to counter the effects of radiation poisoning. Adrenaline was the preferred treatment shortly after Earth's Atomic Age, but hyronalin replaced it after its discovery. (TOS: "The Deadly Years" ) In 2267, Doctor Janet Wallace countered Leonard McCoy's recollection of adrenaline's usage in ancient history (when he mentioned it in relation to a possible cure for rapidly aging members of USS Enterprise's crew) by reminding him that hyronalin was the drug of choice now. (TOS: "The Deadly Years" ) In 2367, hyronalin was used to protect the crew of the USS Enterprise-D from radiation poisoning when a three-hundred-year-old garbage scow was discovered. Dr. Crusher and her staff mass-replicated the drug and prepared to coordinate with Gamelan V's physicians in the administration of it. These actions were taken in response to projected radiation levels that would mostly have affected a trio of islands on the planet. On board the Enterprise, the ventilation system pumped hyronalin into the air supply as a counteragent against the radiation. This additive in the air gave the crew time for safely disposing of the scow into a star. (TNG: "Final Mission" ) The following year, Crusher and La Forge required a few days of hyronalin treatment after exposure to plasma fire radiation. (TNG: "Disaster" ) In 2371, Doctor Julian Bashir used hyronalin to treat Chief Miles O'Brien's radiation poisoning. (DS9: "Visionary") In 2373, The Doctor inoculated Tom Paris temporarily against radiation poisoning from an astral eddy with a combination of hyronalin and lectrazine. (VOY: "Real Life")

(DS9 episode: "Visionary") In 2376, the inhabitants of Europa Nova used hyronalin to treat those suffering from exposure to the theta radiation from the Malon tanker Apsac. They began to run out, although they changed to arithrazine as it better treated the unusual effects of theta radiation better than hyronalin. (DS9 novel: Demons of Air and Darkness)
