The Republic Volunteer Army was a formation of non-clone soldiers who fought for the Galactic Republic during the Clone Wars, along side the Grand Army of the Republic. The Army was made up of primarily Human volunteers, and consisted of some five million members at it's height. It had sour relations with the Grand Army, whose members viewed non-clone volunteers to be useless attention-seekers. The effectiveness of the Volunteer Army varied. Troops of the Army won several battles against the Confederacy of Independent Systems without support of the Grand Army, but in other cases, entire battalions deserted or defected to the Separatists.

Troops of the Army won several battles against the Confederacy of Independent Systems without support of the Grand Army, but in other cases, entire battalions deserted or defected to the Separatists. During the war, the Volunteer Army was divided into several sector army-sized formations, known as Volunteer Armies. They were involved in engagements such as the Battle of Coruscant and Battle of Utapau. However, soldiers of the Army lacked training and proper equipment, such as uniforms. Discipline was generally poor, and during the Battle of Felucia, an entire Volunteer Army was destroyed: out of it's 800,000 men, some 480,000 were killed, while 320,000 defected to the Separatist Droid Army. In 20 BBY, the CIS staff created a Human Legion, made up of some 750,000 human defectors from the Volunteer Army.
