He was slightly slow on the uptake most of the time, which was typical for father dormice. He lived in a den under a tree which was taken over by a vermin band who forced the family to cook for them. The gang caught Wild Doogy Plumm and Yoofus Lightpaw, the latter of which who already was acquainted with the dormice. Doogy, Yoofus and Muskar battled the vermin and killed them, restoring peace to the dormouse family.

Muskar later accompanied Doogy to Yoofus' home after the latter had bolted, taking the drum made by Lady Melesme and fleeing to his home. He volunteered to take care of Yoofus and Didjety Lightpaw's home while they were making for Redwall Abbey with Rockbottom, aka the Walking Stone.
