She started her journey traveling throughout the Hoenn region accompanying Ash and Brock, along with her little brother Max. On the way to the Grand Festival, she met Harley and Drew. When Ash and Brock left for Sinnoh, she goes to Johto alone without Max. She appears in a few episodes of Diamond and Pearl: Battle Dimension, where she traveled to Sinnoh to compete in the Wallace Cup. She reappears in a flashback in The Dream Continues!.

| - May borrowed Hitmonchan from Kyle Hamm after Master Hamm broke his back.
- May was kidnapped by a Skarmory and ended getting lost in a place called the Forbidden Forest, which is a preserve for Grass-type Pokémon. Then May met a clumsy Bulbasaur trying to pick flowers. It eventually evolved in a Ivysaur and much later it evolved into a Venusaur.
- May befriended a Swablu after its wing got injured.
- After May left Skitty and Beautifly in Hoenn, she met up with Ash in Pallet Town and one of Oak's Squirtles seemed to take a liking to her. Professor Oak allowed May to have the Squirtle and traveled in her Poké Ball. It evolved into Wartortle prior while she was in Johto.
- Skitty was caught in the Episode I Feel Skitty when Torchic ran away from a training session with May and found a sick Skitty in the bushes. When Skitty was feeling better, she was playful and energetic and was caught by May.
- May watched a Pokémon Contest and she saw a Beautifly and she wanted one. When May caught a Wurmple, Jessie from Team Rocket had one and were switched but were returned to their rightful trainers. In A Corphish Out of Water, she evolved into a Silcoon. While in Seeing Is Believing!, she evolved into a Beautifly. May uses Beautifly in many of her Pokémon Contests.
- May received Glaceon as an Egg. After hatching into Eevee, it watched every contest that May entered, and eventually entered in contests itself. It was the third Normal-type Pokémon that May obtained, before evolving.
- After Birch was attacked by a Poochyena, he asked May to send out one of the Starter Pokemon. May then sent out Mudkip, but was unable to command it. Later, it drenched May with a Water Gun attack. This was the reason she didn't choose Mudkip as her Starter.
- After May saved the Manaphy egg in Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea, it hatched and imprinted on May and thought she was its mother. It had such a close bond with May, it began learning words and even learn May's name. But it knew it had to leave and protect Samiya, the Sea Temple, even though it did not want to leave her side. Leaving her behind, it left with a few words including "love" and "you".
- May befriend this Bonsly with Ash, Brock and Max when they found it under the table.
- Blaziken was given to May by Professor Birch in Littleroot Town as a Torchic. She chose it as her starter Pokémon because she thought Treecko was creepy and scary , while the starter Mudkip had attacked her earlier with a Water Gun to the face. As a Torchic, it evolved in the episode A Shroomish Skirmish, when trying to fend off some Shroomish and Breloom. It later evolved in the midst of a Pokémon battle with Team Rocket.
- Munchlax was caught in the episode "Berry, Berry Interesting". It uses powerful moves like Solar Beam, Focus Punch and Metronome. It is the only Pokémon which likes May's new recipe Pokéblocks. Even though Munchlax is gluttonous, it is an amazing battler.
