She had an acute form of asthma, one that made it hard for her to breathe on occasion. It had never been a problem for her in the past, but it was a possibility the Empire was unwilling to entertain. Saddened by the refusal, Athena went home where her mother consoled her. After Athena calmed, her mother, Demeter, revealed there were techniques to focus and control conditions like acute asthma. All that Athena needed was an understanding of the Force, just a little to teach her focus and control. Demeter knew little of the mystic power herself, but she was fine sharing what little she knew with her daughter. By the time Athena grew strong enough to use her abilities to control her breathing to such a finite extent, Devin's flight group was in an accident near Dathomir. Terrified for her brother's safety, Athena, against all advice took a small ship to search for Devin. She found no direct sign of her brother, but did see where a group of ships had been attacked. When she went to investigate, a cluster of ships detected Athena and opened fire, disabling her craft.
