  • Chief Hardy is the chief of the Federation Police. He is depicted in the Super Metroid comic and the Metroid Manga. He is pictured as a short, overweight, mustachioed man with a receding hairline, who is constantly stuffing his face with some type of sandwich (the reason for his being overweight). Under his leadership, the Federation Police force dropped its guard down around Zebes, allowing the Space Pirates to rebuild their stronghold. His superior is Chairman Keaton, who looks down upon him and thinks of him as incompetent. At the end of the comic series, he is the one who kills the baby with his laser gun, as he mistook it for a normal Metroid. A similar-looking character appeared as the apparent head of the Federation in an early manga, known as Commander Nemo. Hardy made a later appearance in the Metroid Manga, an earlier (and canon) story which introduces him on Jigrad following Samus's actions in destroying the Space Pirates there and chews her, Mauk and Kreatz out for disobeying their orders. However, his tirade is cut off when Commander Adam Malkovich appears to survey the trouble and question the Pirate leader, P-1. Compared to his prior incarnation, this version of Hardy is a bit less lazy, but still not all too bright. By the end of the manga Hardy is pictured as completely bald (perhaps due to his hair receding completely or him shaving his head). He introduces the story of the Metroid to Samus, and is surprised that she is able to name the yet-unnamed creature. Chief Hardy also appears in the Super Metroid Nintendo Player's Guide, in panels taken from the Super Metroid comic.
