Following an unknown skirmish, the old Shining Force were able to seal demon Zeon in the abyss and locked the gateway in the Ancient Tower. As time went on, peace prevailed and people forgot about the horrors of Zeon's time. Maximillian, one of the members of that team, set up a family on the island, which included his grandson, Bowie. Many decades after the famous victory, Bowie became a warrior himself, although quite inept. He grew up with his neighbour, Taya, and the pair would occasionally hold battles of strength in the street.

As time went on, peace prevailed and people forgot about the horrors of Zeon's time. Maximillian, one of the members of that team, set up a family on the island, which included his grandson, Bowie. Many decades after the famous victory, Bowie became a warrior himself, although quite inept. He grew up with his neighbour, Taya, and the pair would occasionally hold battles of strength in the street. One day, Baron Kadavaar, a Zeonite, landed on Granseal Island in search of Zynk, his robot. He was successful but was unable to capture him before Zynk was teleported away by Max. Upon recognising the man who sealed Zeon away, Kadavaar murdered Max. Meanwhile, an archeological dig in Ribble that had unearthed relics from a forgotten civilisation had been taken over by the Zeonites. Guns and a nuclear bomb were transferred from Ribble to Granseal Island, somehow getting into the Ancient Tower. Civilians began to become suspicious of activity surrounding the castle but were unable to get through the locked doors. After some investigating, the Shining Force were able to teleport into the Ancient Tower. Inside, they discovered the nuclear bomb which, according to Zynk, could wipe out half of Granseal Island. With the help of Bowie's sword, the Shining Force pushed the bomb into the gateway and saved the island.
