abstract
  • General elections were held in the Central Majatran Union on 12 October 4103, to elect the 130 members of the Peace at Home Council, the military junta that had governed the country since they staged the 8 January 4103 coup d'état. The previous elections, held in 4100, were the first in the bi-zonal Central Majatran Union, and were held under a constitution recognizing Kalopian and Tukaric as equal languages; their respective groups were guaranteed equal political autonomy. However, the Tukars, who led the country from 4058 to 4100 under the Motherland Party (AP), generally disapproved of the new form of government. Furthermore, a pro-ethnic Kalopian party, the Kalopian Liberals of Ariston Galatos (President 4100–4103), scored a landslide victory in the 4100 elections, causing unrest in the Tukaric camp. On 8 January 4103, the Central Majatran Armed Forces, largely pro-Tukaric, orchestrated a coup d'état that saw the violent overthrow of the Liberal government. President Galatos was killed during the coup, and replaced by army general Abdullah Hoca. The country was led by the non-elected, military-appointed Peace at Home Council for nine months, from the 8 January coup until the 12 October elections. The 4103 elections elected 130 deputies to the Council, 70 of which were associated with the pro-Tukaric Socialist Populist Party (SHP), while the remaining 60 were elected to directly represent the Armed Forces. The new Peace at Home Council was tasked with drafting a new constitution for the country; once this task was completed in mid-4104, new elections were held. There is general consensus among observers, analysts and historians that the 4103 elections were not free or fair; sources show that the vote was heavily rigged in favor of SHP and military-backed candidates, with no effective opposition securing seats. The Liberals, who governed from 4100 until the January 4103 coup d'état, along with most other opposition, were banned by the Peace at Home Council and thus barred from running in 4103.
