  • Distinct from both drugs and vitamins, magic mushrooms, also known as shrooms, are a large fungus of benign qualities that manifest themselves as a direct result of interaction with seratonin receptors located in the cerebellum. These receptors direct the flow of electricity to the area in which it is to be received, sound to ear, taste to tongue, et cetera. Under the influence of any hallucinogen, excluding ecstasy and ketamine, these receptors redirect the path of thought to stimulate other neurons that wouldn't be stimulated otherwise. (that's the good bit) Inexplicably, the thought, though augmented, always makes it to its destination.

One can also be found in any of the Hidden Holes with the common layout. If Link puts a Magic Mushroom in a bottle, it can be brought to the Magic Hags' Potion Shop and given to Kotake, who will in exchange make Blue Potions for Link to purchase. The first time (in each three day cycle) that Link brings her a mushroom she will give him a Blue Potion for free. After this any number of Blue Potions may be purchased, and additional Magic Mushrooms can be traded in for 20 Rupees. The Curiosity Shop will buy Magic Mushrooms for 5 Rupees.
  • "Magic Mushroom" is a mushroom monster.
  • In Real Life, Mushrooms, toadstools, and fungi comprise a vast array of types and genuses. While a few are cultivated for food, and some for medicinal or religious (or hallucenogenic) purposes, others are so toxic they are outright lethal, so one should never assume that a mushroom found in the wild is safe to eat without consulting a reference book (or better yet, a trained expert who can distinguish between seemingly identical specimens). Sometimes the visible mushrooms are actually just the tip of a proverbial iceberg, with the majority of the organism being a large underground colony of fungus. And the ability of fungi to reproduce via infectious microscopic spores allows them to grow in just about any environment (including inside living bodies), and can make it nearly impossible to get rid of a fungus infestation. Fictional mushrooms can do all of the above, and more: Eating a mushroom can produce downright magical effects (like making you bigger or smaller, turning you invisible, etc.), and getting infected by mushroom spores can not only make you sick, but physically transform you into a monster, possibly taking over your mind in the process; villains in particular can even weaponize the spores, turning them into a tool for Mind Control or Brainwashing unsuspecting innocents. Often used by witches, as it's a symbol of their knowledge of the nature around them. What they do with it is another matter. Toadstools appear to be most common in healing potions or poisons, though the last one does not require much magic. Toadstools and brightly colored mushrooms are often hiding places for smaller members of the Fair Folk. In some cases, the fungi, usually mushroom-like, can even become ambulatory. This is usually not a good thing, unless they just want to dance. See also Fantastic Fruits and Vegetables. Examples of Magic Mushroom include:
  • I looked it up on Google. It came up with a dog toy. Darn it.

  • The Magic Mushroom is the secondary antagonist of Tonic Trouble. He is a mushroom resembling a wizard, and has magical power. When Ed nearly had all the parts for Doc's machine that would send him to Grögh's Kingdom, the Magic Mushroom appeared and stole the final part, the sixth Piggy, taking it to his hideout so that he could conquer meat fiber with vegetable fiber. Once Ed collected enough Antidotes, he was able to enter the Magic Mushroom's Hideout and battle him on a lava platform. This is possibly the longest boss fight in Tonic Trouble. Ed could only damage him by shooting him with his Peashooter (which now had infinite ammo) when his shield was down. In battle he used magic attacks, electricity, and raised four disappearing platforms in an attempt to make Ed fall in the lava. Eventually the Magic Mushroom was damaged to the point of his shield no longer being indestructable. Cursing Ed for this, he used his "avant-garde attack" and shot balls of electricity at Ed. Ed shot his shield 10 times to deactivate it and then shot him. He had to do the entire process three times, but the third hit with the Peashooter finally defeated the Magic Mushroom. After relinquishing the sixth pig, the Magic Mushroom fell into the lava.
  • When the condor dropped Graham by the hole on the Mushroom Isle leading to the Land of the Leprechauns, he found a mushroom growing nearby. As it turned out, Graham needed to eat the fungus in order to return to the world above ground. This solution to his predicament is much like the one Alice used in her famous adventures. At one point in Wonderland she met a hookah-smoking caterpillar sitting on a mushroom. Between puffs, the creature told Alice the mushroom was what she needed to change size--one side to make her taller, the other side to make her shorter. Since the girl had already been stretched and shrunk by a variety of cakes and potions, she had no trouble at all believing what the caterpillar said. In another adventure underground, the caterpillar showed Alice a mushroom and said that if she ate the top of the mushroom, it would make her taller, and the stalk would make her shrink.
