Urged by some morbid fascination, they spend their time studying the vile substance and its effects on the flora, fauna and homins. They endeavour to link the goo to magic in the hope of acquiring more and more power. They have thus made groundbreaking discoveries which they jealously keep secret, only giving snippets of knowledge to their disciples and allies, such as the tribe of the Darkening Sap. The tribe also excerces pressure on governments for goo study to be accepted so they can lawfully use the goo all over the planet without restraint.

Its powers are to seek, capture and imprison Earth Fairies as well as to steal their magic powers by plucking their wings. The Black Circle is the magical opposite of the White Circle.
- The Black Circle was a movement first started by the Archangels, mainly Azriel and his right-hand man, Damien. The goal of the group was to protest against Atlantis' decision to make angels and non-celestial beings equal. It gained a lot support and not just from gods and angels, a few non-celestial beings also supported the Black Circle.
- The Black Circle were an intergalactic crime syndicate conssiting of an infamous ring of criminals that operated throughout known space where they took part in many illegal activities ranging from drugs to weapons to murder and even slavery. At some point, Amon Sur who was the son of Abin Sur, rose to a high ranking position within the Black Circle. The group also managed to entice the services of the feared bounty hunter Shiro Nova by threatening his family. In addition, they held a constant presence on the world of Zymia where they discovered Bynari's past as a member of the Green Lantern Corps.

According to Ogron, it is the source of the power of the Wizards. However after the Black Circle is destroyed when Morgana is tricked into wearing it, the Wizards still have their powers, though this could be because the Wizards already had magical powers before creating the Black Circle and the powers of the Fairies they captured were absorbed into the Black Circle and gave the Wizards more magical strength. Thus, when the Circle was destroyed, what remained with them was only their original strength from before they started the Fairy Hunt. Or maybe when Bloom gave the Black Circle back to Ogron before he gave it to Morgana then he and the other Wizards took back their powers from it. When the Wizards captured Fairies and plucked their wings, they also stole the powers of these Fairies which was absorbed into the Black Circle and imprisoned the Fairies themselves in the realm of Tir Nan Og, and this made the Wizards stronger as the Black Circle probably fed from the powers of the imprisoned Fairies as well. When the Winx freed the Earth Fairies, the Wizards were greatly weakened as the energy that had been absorbed in the Black Circle was now free and the Black Circle could no longer feed upon the captured Fairies' power.

A faction of the group splintered from the main body and were engaged in their own drug running operations on the planet Earth. This necessitated Amon Sur to travel to the planet where tricked heroes Kyle Rayner and Green Arrow into thinking he was a hero. Thus, he used them into achieving his motivations which got the splinter group of Black Circle thugs caught and left them in the custody of the DEO before escaping which led to the Green Lantern Corps engaging in a hunt for the Black Circle and Amon Sur.

Elder Gods, mainly Luke and Eleison, became infuriated and summoned Azriel before court. Just as Azriel was to be sentenced, Azriel attempted a coup d'etat, nearly killing Eleison. The Elder Gods were able to neutralize Azriel and the instigators and banished them. With most of its organization gone, the Black Circle fell into the leadership of Ppelono, Mystia, and Azriel's girlfriend, Brit. Shortly afterwards, they gained the support of Elder Gods Izen and Amen, and minor god Marcosius. Shortly afterwards, Ppelono was killed by Tenkai Hyachi at the Maverick Hills Incident. Izen, who barely survived Tenkai's attack, was furious. With the propaganda of the Holy Lord, the Black Circle began The Great God War. Everything after that went down hill. Izen was killed during the war. Marcosius and Amen resigned. At the end of the war, Sirberius Reono, sent by Draethius, killed most of the members, including Mystia and Brit. With only the Four Horsemen in control, the Black Circle went to pieces.
