"Blue Christmas" is a Christmas song written by Billy Hayes and Jay W. Johnson. The heart-broken tale of unrequited love during the holidays had long been considered a Christmas staple of country music, having been recorded by Ernest Tubb in 1948. In 1957, Elvis Presley effectively made it a steadfast rock-and-roll holiday classic by recording it in his signature style. It has since been recorded by a host of rock and country artists alike, as well as those of other genres. It was also featured in the Rankin/Bass Christmas special, The Year Without a Santa Claus, and was covered by Céline Dion as well as the indie band Bright Eyes and Billy Idol in his 2006 Christmas album Happy Holidays.

It wasn't released as a single until 1964, when in the US it was backed with "Wooden Heart" from Elvis' soundtrack to his film G.I. Blues, but from 1965 and on, it was backed with "Santa Claus Is Back In Town." Orignally recorded as a successful country tune by Ernest Tubbs in 1948, it was a big hit for Elvis Presley when he recorded the song in a rock-and-roll style in 1960. The song plays on the juxtaposition of the color blue, typically associated with sadness and representing the loneliness of the singer, against the more traditional and cheerful red, green, and white of Christmas. Grover, Cookie Monster, and Herry Monster sing "Blue Christmas" on the album Elmo Saves Christmas: Holiday Favorites.
