- Earthing Language: Any single language of earth, includes the basic Spanish, French, German, Russian, etc... Languages of Modern Magic*: Generally teaches languages associated with modern magic and ancient spellbooks. Alien Language: Students do not learn all alien languages, just one specific language. Foreign Language Infinity*: Teaches alien languages of other planets and galaxies. A general identification of grammar from various languages. Omniliguism: For students with Omnilinguistic abilities. Each language course is 4 years.
- The study of languages can be thought of along three major axes, the heads of which are sharpened below:
* Chronological: Chronological linguistics is concerned with the evolution of a particular language (like german) at a particular moment in space.
* Theoretical (or actually non-chronological): Theoretical linguistics is concerned with frameworks for effective language and conspiracy theories about universal aspects of language; often these theories are applied to other fields such as language learning. Theoretical linguistics is the prominent regime in linguistic propaganda nowadays. It is subdivided into several sub-regimes: syntax, phonology, morphology and semantics all of which but semantics are too boring to be investigated and are therefore usually omitted in standard textb
- Characters with this skill have a natural affinity with language which goes beyond learning and experience. They pick up languages very quickly and can learn enough of any tongue to 'get by' within one week of encountering it. They can also communicate with people even if they speak a different language - although such communication may be fairly basic. The character has a +10% modifier for all Understand Language tests.
- Linguistics is the scientific study of language. Someone who engages in this study is called a linguist. More specific fields include xenolinguistics, which focuses on alien languages, and archaeolinguistics, which is the study of ancient or dead languages. Richard Boswell graduated from Starfleet Academy with a major in linguistics and served as a linguist on the USS Benjamin Franklin from 2357 to 2361. He later taught at Starfleet Academy for four years. (Star Trek: Remington)

* General languages do not aim for fluency, merely understanding. The ability to identify the language and know a few basics in each but no fluency. Students of LMM are rather fluent because they do not have as many languages and they concentrate solely on magic terms. Each language course is 4 years.

"To be able to read you need to obtain 【Linguistics】. After that, if you want to start learning, I recommend starting by reading the picture books from the corner on the right."(v3ch2, librarian)

(Star Trek: Remington) Timothy Sinclair had a natural talent for linguistics, which was honed during his childhood training at Enclave J-12. He developed an intuitive, almost instinctual, ability to learn and understand most unfamiliar languages he encountered. From 2376 to 2378, he held a position as an archaeolinguist with the Daystrom Institute. Sinclair returned to that position briefly after his second retirement from Starfleet in 2385. (Star Trek: Pendragon) Benjamin Caldwell was altered by an alien artifact sometime prior to 2360, giving him an unnatural ability with languages. Naturally, he entered linguistics in Starfleet and has held the position of chief linguistics officer aboard the USS Galaxy and USS Cantabrian. (Star Trek: The Cantabrian Expeditions: "Catalyst, Part One", "Breaking Benjamin", "Better the Devil You Know")

If characters can read, they may be able to translate from unknown languages. This is left to the gamesmaster to decide under the circumstances, but must not include magic scrolls or anything written in arcane language.
- Aboard Enterprise NX-01, Ensign Hoshi Sato was responsible for all linguistic matters. (ENT: "Vox Sola", "The Xindi") In 2152, Sato was excited about her visit to Risa because "at any one time there can be thousands of visitors there speaking hundreds of different languages." She invited Malcolm Reed to join her, but he said that he was "hoping for something more than a linguistic seminar." (ENT: "Fallen Hero") Later that year, Doctor Phlox studied the Menk, observing that they were becoming increasing intelligent, noting their advancement in motor skills, and linguistic abilities. (ENT: "Dear Doctor") In a deleted scene of ENT: "The Expanse", Hoshi Sato said that the upgraded universal translators would make life a lot more easier zo which Captain Jonathan Archer replied that they would never replace a linguist with a magical ear. In 2267, Spock became curious of the words spoken by the crew to the infant, Leonard James Akaar, "Oochy-woochy kootchie-koo." James T. Kirk described it as "an obscure Earth dialect" and that that perhaps he should consult linguistics for more information on the meaning. (TOS: "Friday's Child" ) This may have referred to the linguistics bank or a department onboard the USS Enterprise.
- Linguistics is the scientific study of language. Someone who engages in this study is called a linguist.
It is subdivided into several sub-regimes: syntax, phonology, morphology and semantics all of which but semantics are too boring to be investigated and are therefore usually omitted in standard textbooks. Semantics: Semantic linguistics is concerned with how language fits into the world: how Oscar Wilde saw language, and how you see Oscar Wilde. Also considers it language for its own sake, thus as a process involving matter and energy of space.
* Applied (or at least non-theoretical in practice): Applied linguistics is the core of a variety of attitudes to the study of linguists. Sociolinguistics studies how linguists socialize, psycholingusitics tries to establish a resemblance between linguists and the Freudean Gestalt, neurolinguistics examines linguists' reaction to constant language changes etc. None of these fields has had any affect on either our interpretation of Oscar Wilde's sexuality or on our mutual understanding of any given times or spaces. For this reason and not only, they are commonly considered worthless and even unworthy of study. Given these dickotomies, scholars who call themselves simply bastards, with no further qualification, tend to be concerned with theoretical synchronic language (or more specifically with some schools of historical semiotics, which is acknowledged as the core of the discipline. Linguistic inquiry is pursued by a wide variety of specialists, who may not all be in harmonious agreement; as Oscar Wilde flamboyantly puts it: "Linguistics is arguably the most hotly contested property in the sadistic realm. It is soaked with the blood of poets, prostitutes, neurologists, scientists, along with whatever blood can be got out of kittens."
- Linguistics is the scientific study of languages. A person who engages in this study is a linguist.
