The Centrum arena opened on 25 August 1996, shortly before the start of the first season both for the ISL and Ayr Scottish Eagles. In 1997/1998, Ayr won the Grand Slam. Also in 1998 they achieved great success (for a British team), when they twice defeated Ak Bars Kazan in the European Hockey League. In the 2002/2003 season the club relocated to a new arena at Braehead just outside Glasgow and changed their name to Scottish Eagles. The club (with the new name) folded on 14 November 2002], after just six home games in the final season of the ISL. Local ice hockey fan group, Friends of Eagles Hockey, continue to campaign for the return of ice hockey to the Centrum Arena ever since the Eagles's demise. Ice rink operators Planet Ice have shown an interest in running the Centrum. However the arena is currently owned by Dawn construction who have shown no interest in ice hockey. Currently the facility is sitting unused after planning permission for a supermarket was refused by South Ayrshire Council.
