Andrzejewski was born in Brooklyn, New York. Her family moved to New Jersey and later she married her high school sweetheart, Dennis Benatar in 1972, he was in the Army and the couple moved from New Jersey to South Carolina to Virginia, where she worked as a bank teller. Benetar was drawn to pursue singing after watching a Liza Minnelli concert in Richmond. She began appearing in her trademark black tights, eyeliner, and top in 1977. In 1979 she was signed to Chrysalis Records and released her first album, In The Heat of the Night (featuring "Heartbreaker", "We Live For Love", and "I Need A Lover", written by a then-unknown John Mellencamp), which was followed by Crimes of Passion (featuring "Hit Me With Your Best Shot"—her first Top 10 single, "Treat Me Right", and "You Better Run", the second video ever played on MTV), Precious Time (featuring "Fire and Ice"), Get Nervous (featuring "Shadows of the Night"—the video featured Bill Paxton), Live From Earth (featuring "Love Is A Battlefield"), Tropico (featuring "We Belong" and "Diamond Field"), the song "Invincible" from the movie The Legend of Billie Jean, Seven The Hard Way (featuring "Sex As A Weapon"), and "Wide Awake In Dreamland" (featuring "All Fired Up"). She earned four Grammy wins in four consecutive years (from 1980–83) and was nominated a total of eight times in 10 years. Recently Benatar toured with fellow 80's band Blondie, in 2010 toured with REO Speedwagon, in 2012 toured with 80's icons Journey and Loverboy, in 2014 Benatar toured with Cher, then a 35th Anniversary tour with Rick Springfied, Cheap Trick, and John Waite, and in 2016 Benatar has a solo "We Live For Love" tour, her first solo tour since 2008.
