- Ensign Zak Adama was William Adama's son, Lee's brother, and the fiance of his flight instructor, Kara Thrace. His grandparents and other relations are later introduced in Caprica. He was pressured into joining the military by his father, despite Lee's insistence that Zak was ill-suited to be a pilot. Zak introduces Lee to Kara during a dinner at the latter's home on Caprica. Lacking the other two's tolerance for alcohol, he is the first to pass out after dinner. While unconscious, he is nearly cuckolded by his fiancée and brother until the amorous pair change their minds and Lee departs.

As did Lee, Kara recognizes that Zak lacks sufficient aptitude for military aviation, but nevertheless passes him on his final flight exam because of their romantic involvement. He is soon killed in a Viper crash. Kara meets Commander William Adama at Zak's funeral. Thereafter, she wears Zak's ring on her thumb.
