  • The Laura Beavers were an intermediate team. They won the Saskatchewan intermediate championship in 1944-45 Saskatchewan Intermediate Playoffs and then went on to win the 1944-45 Western Canada Intermediate Playoffs. One of the big reasons that they were able to win that season is that they had Doug Bentley on their team. Bentley was forced to stay home in Saskatchewan and tend to his farm. The Canadian governement had instituted compulsory service in World War II and required Bentley to either do military service or war work. He could also not leave the country. For those reasons he could not play in the National Hockey League. During the war amateur restrictions were relaxed so that a professional like Bentley was allowed to play intermediate.
