- The Nebula-class was a type of Federation starship in use by Starfleet in the 24th century. Officially designated as an explorer, the Nebula ships were also sometimes referred to as cruisers. This class was named for spectacular galactic gas clouds known as nebulae. - Distinctive Starfleet design with nacelles on pylons hugging the saucer underside and a distinctive triangular wedge, located over the rear saucer, rather than an underside secondary hull. This starship design is similar to the design of the Galaxy class starship, but rather than being a flagship, nebula class starships are primarily assigned to scientific research duties, such as astronomical survey projects.
- The Nebula-class was a class of exploratory cruiser that saw service in Starfleet during the 24th century. The maximum evacuation capacity of Nebula-class ships were 9,800 people. (Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual) Its modular design allowed Nebulas to serve a variety of purposes by housing either an advanced sensor package or a weapons platform. While equipped with the weapons platform, the Nebula-class was designated a battle cruiser, while not being as heavily armored as battlecruisers fielded by other races.
