Essi erano inizialmente divisi in tre casate principali: la Casa di Bëor, la Casa di Hador e la Casa di Haleth; gli uomini di queste casate avevano delle caratteristiche particolari che li differenziavano dai loro fratelli, un po' come gli Elfi che erano divisi a loro volta ne popoli dei Noldor, dei Vanyar, dei Teleri e dei Nandor. Quasi completamente massacrati da Morgoth, dopo la Guerra d'Ira i superstiti delle case di Hador e Bëor, rimasti poche decine di migliaia, vennero invitati dai Valar a trasferirsi sotto la guida di Elros nell'isola di Númenor e dettero origine alla razza dei Dúnedain.
