Lilja spent the 2004-05 lock-out in the Elitserien with Mora IK. His stay in his homeland was however spoiled by accusations of an alleged gang rape of a 22 years old woman with fellow Swedish NHLers Kristian Huselius and Henrik Tallinder. The accusations were later dropped, but it was too late for Lilja, who had been suspended by Mora. He joined HC Ambri-Piotta for the NLA playoffs, but the team failed to go very far in the postseason. Following the lock-out, Lilja joined the Red Wings.
