From 1989 he was placed in charge of Special Operations. It was he, therefore, that Adam Pierson turned to during the search for MacLeod after the Dark Quickening. Pierson acknowledged his request was irregular and Massanet pointed out he was not supposed to be in the field, but supplied him the information that MacLeod had called Sean Burns. In March 1996, Massanet filed a formal complaint about Joe Dawson "overstepping...territorial and administrative boundaries" in his use of "a mere researcher" like Pierson, "someone who can't find his way out of a library without a map," in the investigation of a Dark Quickening. During his investigation of Watcher murders later that same year, he was himself murdered by Jacob Galati. His name is recorded in the Watchers' Hall of Martyrs.
