Devo was spawned in a potato factory in Akron, Ohio. They were formed by two sets of brothers, the Mothersbaughs (Mark and Bob) and the Casales (Gerald and Bob), along with some guy named Alan Myers. The name "Devo" came from B.H. Shadduck's 1925 creationist booklet Jocko-Homo Heavenbound, where Shadduck disproved Darwin's theory of evolution and gave evidence that the human race was instead de-volving into ape-men, or "Jocko Homos". Mark Mothersbaugh paid tribute to Shadduck by quoting a line from the booklet in Devo's song "Jocko Homo", wherein he sang "God made man, but he used the monkey to do it."

Peter takes their instructions to "whip it good" as criticism and insists he is doing the best that he can. • Their style over time has shifted between punk, art rock, post-punk, and New Wave. Their music and stage show mingle kitsch science fiction themes, deadpan surrealist humor, and mordantly satirical social commentary. Their often discordant pop songs feature unusual synthetic instrumentation and time signatures that have proven influential on subsequent popular music, particularly New Wave, industrial and alternative rock artists. Devo was also a pioneer of the music video, creating many memorable clips for the Laser Disc format. (Read more at Wikipedia)
  • The band devolved from a long line of brain-eating apes, some of which settled around NE Ohio near Akron where members of DEVO eventually appeared years after the A-Bomb ended World War II. By the process of natural selection they met and shared the habits of making electronic noise, watching TV, and watching everybody else. They called what they saw around them DE-EVOLUTION and called their music DEVO. It made the sound of things falling apart. Spuds yelled and threw things like beer bottles at DEVO when they played. But one day in 1977 the Spuds cheered and threw fits because Spudboys in the cities realized that WE’RE ALL DEVO.
  • DEVO began as an art project in the early 1970s between a few art students after the massacre at Kent State University on May 4, 1970. After a discussion of what devo music would sound like, Gerald Casale, Bob Lewis, and Peter Gregg began recording proto-Devo songs in a small studio located above a pizza shop. With Casale on bass, Lewis on slide guitar, and Gregg on rhythm guitar, they wrote and performed prototypes of "Auto Modown", "I Need a Chick", "I Been Refused", and "Beehive".
