Gray Vale, also seen as Grayvale, was the area centered around Loudwater in 1479 DR. During the 14th century DR the Grayvale was merely a part of the region known locally as the Delimbiyr Crescent but after the Spellplague and the reduction in the region's population, the nomenclature appears to have been simplified and the entire valley south of the High Forest as well as the surrounding lands became known as the Grey Vale.

It was presumably named after the Graypeak Mountains, which sheltered the area in the east; the Grey Highlands and the Greyflow river, which joins the Delimbiyr as a major tributary - all of which were local geographical features.
