- Khaos (also spelled Chaos) was the first of the Protogenoi (primeval gods) and precedes the universe. He was followed in quick succession by Gaia (Earth), Tartaros (the Underworld) and Eros (Love the life-bringer). Later authors defined Khaos as the chaotic mix of elements that existed in the primeval universe, confusing it with the primeval Mud of the Orphic cosmogonies, but this was not the original meaning. Deeming the humans inferior beings, it decided to exterminate human life from the universe (apparently this was the purpose of it's creators), and for this end Khaos gathered military power and created the ORN Empire. It's main opposition comes from the Galaxy Federation and their Fire LEO series of spacecrafts. Khaos was destroyed once in the events of Thunder Force III, but it survived and showed again in Thunder Force IV, when it was finally destroyed for good. The ensuing explosion made Rynex drift in space aimlessly (their pilots had ejected at the last second), which led to the events of Thunder Force V. Even without their leader, the ORN Empire continued to exist under the rule of ORN Faust and was never truly defeated. Khaos was later revived as the ORN Emperor.

Pur fungendo solamente da boss finale nel gioco originale, Chaos è reintrodotto come cattivo principale nell'universo di Dissidia Final Fantasy, in cui si contrappone a Cosmos, dea dell'armonia, in un ciclo infinito di battaglie. Il personaggio ricompare come cattivo anche in altri spin-off della saga di Final Fantasy, e numerosi riferimenti a lui sono fatti anche in capitoli della saga regolare.

Khaos was the lower atmosphere which surrounded the earth - invisible air and gloomy mist. His name khaos literally means the gap, the space between heaven and earth. Khaos was the father or grandfather of the other substances of air: Nyx (Night), Erebos (Darkness), Aither (Light) and Hemera (Day), as well as the various emotion-affecting Daimones which drifted through it. He was also a god of fate like his daughter Nyx and grand-daughters the Moirai.
