The Great Link was the intermingling of many Changelings in their natural liquid form, forming the ruling body of the Dominion. (DS9: "The Search, Part II") As the home of the Founders, the Link was effectively the "capital" of the Dominion. In 1879, the Great Link launched a Dominion attack against a group of El Aurian transport ships who attempted to colonize near their homeworld. This prompted a young shapeshifter to leave the Link and live among the solids in the Alpha Quadrant. (Star Trek: Phoenix-X: "The Links' Traitor")

For millennia, the Link was located on a rogue planet inside the Omarion Nebula, until it was discovered by Odo and the crew of the USS Defiant in 2371. Later that year, the Tal Shiar and the Obsidian Order launched a joint assault on the Founders' homeworld, intending to wipe out the Founders and destroy the Dominion. However, the entire attack was actually a plot to weaken the Cardassians and the Romulans – the Founders had already evacuated their planet, and a fleet of Jem'Hadar attack ships was waiting to annihilate the invaders. • The Great Link was endangered by the morphogenic virus created by Section 31 to kill the Founders. The Female Changeling decided to end the Dominion War in exchange for Odo curing the Great Link. (DS9 episodes: "Treachery, Faith, and the Great River", "What You Leave Behind") Following the Dominion War the Link was unpeaceful as it considered reports each Changeling had bought back of their massive defeat and consequences it continued to have in Dominion territory. The Link was also unsettled by ideas the Changeling Odo had brought back with him of not ruling with an iron fist and greater respect for solids. Despite Odo's arguments the Link persisted in quelling rebellion with the Jem'Hadar. Laas was used by the Link as a singular mouthpiece to communicate their intent to Odo. Despite Odo's initiative, to send a Jem'Hadar envoy to the Alpha Quadrant to further good relations, the Link feared an attack by the Alpha Quadrant powers in retaliation for the war. (DS9 novel: Avatar, Book Two) In 2376, the Great Link came to an end. (DS9 - Worlds of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine novel: The Dominion: Olympus Descending)

(DS9: "The Die is Cast") In 2372, the Founders forced Odo to return to the Great Link (on the new Founders' homeworld) for judgment after he killed a fellow Changeling. As punishment for his crime, Odo's shapeshifting abilities were taken away, and he was given Human form. (DS9: "Broken Link") Unknown to the Founders at the time, Odo's temporary joining with the Link had infected all of the Changelings with a morphogenic virus that began to inhibit their natural shapeshifting abilities, slowly killing them. A cure was brought back by Odo in 2375, who single-handedly cured the entire Great Link. After curing his people, Odo decided to stay with the Link. (DS9: "What You Leave Behind")
