A lifelong sufferer from clinical depression, Garrison combatted his problem by composing and perform relentlessly uplifing music. This drew him some critical scorn, but Garrison offered no apologies. He was chosen to provide material for a composition album alongside his influences Tangerine Dream and Jean-Michel Jarre in 1985, which he regarded as a great honor. Unfortunately, in the 1990s he turned to alcohol to self-treat his condition. After seven highly regarded albums between 1979 and 1989, he produced only two more of new material in the 1990s, and nothing after 1998. He died of liver failure in 2004.
