The term "Old One" is used to refer to a god or deity, and have been used in fantasy horror and science fiction, quite commonly in H.P. Lovecraft's fiction in various context. The pictured creature appears to be a member of the species which came to be known as the Elder Things, the term "Old One" being used for several different orders of creature by Lovecraft himself. The Elder Things were introduced in the short story "At the Mountains of Madness," were they are, indeed, referred to by the narrator as "the Old Ones."

In Dark Storm, Dax and the Old One become one to fight the vampire Mitro: "Not two beings merged together, but two souls connected by a single body."
- The Old Ones were brought forth from another, more horrific, dimension during the creation of Earth through the Seed of Wonder. They shared the Earth with fellow higher beings which would come to be known as The Powers That Be. Robert Black had met with him a number of times to try and address the fear that his race had with the recently arrived Humans. He, and others of his race believed that the Humans brought darkness with them. The fear that his people had for the humans turned out to be legitimate, as the Humans brought the Drakh plague with them. The Drakh plague infected the villagers at an accelerated rate.
