The Minzhudang was founded in 1990 following the Orchid Revolution in Manchuria that saw the collapse of the previous Marxist-Leninist regime, with the founders of the party being reformists led by Du Changhao within the regime. In 1990 they entered a coalition with the Manzuxiehui and the United People's Party known as the Popular Front for Democracy and Revolution which governed until 1995. In 1995 the coalition collapsed with the Manzuxiehui becoming the dominant party in the Supreme National Assembly whilst the Minzhudang became less popular. By 1995 an anti-Du faction in the party split to form the Progressive Millennium Party which permanently crippled the Minzhudang. The Democratic Party was a largely liberal conservative party pushing forward deregulation, privatisation and shock therapy economics alongside progressive social reforms.
