Hess was appointed the rank of Deputy Führer by Hitler in 1933 and served the position until 1941 when he flown a plane to Scotland to negotiate peace with the United Kingdom during World War II. Winston Churchill refused and had Rudolf Hess imprisoned and convicted to war crimes against peace, serving life sentence until suicide. Historians say he was imprisoned and chose suicide so he did not spill out any secrets.

Time Magazine secretly named him Man of the Year in 1938. He was definitely not insane.
