She finally allowed Sam and Joe to visit Maggie, hoping that the painful experience of seeing the girl's condition would deter them from further intrusions. Julia had been highly recommended by an old colleague, Dr. Dave Woodard, not only for her knowledge of psychology, but also of blood disorders. Woodard and Julia did not agree on methodologies, and Julia stated that her technique excluded regard for the human condition to focus on finding the truth (265). Julia opposed Woodard's idea to show Maggie a sketch drawn by her father, but Maggie identified the child in the picture as Sarah Collins (276). Later Julia was able to get Maggie to remember the sound of tinkling music, a sweet odor, and a memory of being in a cemetery (282). When Woodard complained that Julia was holding back information, Hoffman, unwilling to tell any of her findings, suggested that Woodard find a new doctor for Maggie. Woodard declined Julia's suggestion, but argued against the idea of Maggie returning to Collinsport to test Julia's theories about her memory. Julia took Maggie, against Woodard's objections, to Eagle Hill Cemetery, where Maggie was accidentally seen from a distance by her friend Victoria Winters. Hiding Maggie out of sight, Julia found her to be terrified of the Collins Mausoleum, saying that a man would kill her if she did not get away. Julia suspected the grave of Sarah Collins belonged to an ancestor of Maggie's friend (283). To explore her findings from the cemetery, and with Dr. Woodard's help, Julia began posing as an historian. Claiming to be writing a book about famous New England families, Julia came to Collinwood, where she spoke with Victoria Winters and David Collins. When the conversation turned to Sarah Collins, Julia was interested in Vicky's feeling that Sarah was not real. Vicky took Julia to the Old House to meet Barnabas Collins, hoping to enlist his help with Julia's book. Later, Julia repeated several names from her visit to Maggie, and the girl reacted with strong horror to the name Barnabas Collins (284). Julia met resistance from Elizabeth Collins Stoddard when she disclosed plans to write a book on the Collins family with the matriarch. With the help of Vicky, Elizabeth reconsidered, and Julia moved into Collinwood. Barnabas also expressed disinterest in the project and refused to share information with Julia (287). The doctor spoke with David Collins again, and he provided her with the family album containing pictures of the Collins ancestors. Julia took it to Barnabas, who agreed to look at the book. While Barnabas' back was turned, Julia opened her compact mirror and saw that he cast no reflection in it. Barnabas caught her, but Julia claimed that she was only checking her make-up. Upon returning to Collinwood, Julia told Vicky that she had learned everything she needed to know (288). During a large storm, Julia studied the Collins family history by candlelight. She questioned Vicky about Josette Collins, and was interested to learn of the tinkling melody from Josette's music box as well as the fact that Barnabas kept a bottle of Josette's perfume in her room at the Old House. Julia suggested that Barnabas may have been trying to recreate Josette by exposing Vicky to so much of the dead girl's life. After sunrise, Julia sneaked into the Old House through a window in the parlor and went to the basement, where she witnessed Barnabas sleeping in his coffin (289). Dr. Woodard pressured Julia for information on her investigation, but Julia lied, misleading Woodard into thinking she had found nothing. Barnabas came to Collinwood to speak with Julia, and she again offered to work with him. Julia indicated she had information about the original Barnabas Collins, hinting that she knew Barnabas' secret. After Julia suggested meeting during the day, the two agreed to talk again the following evening. Barnabas left, and Julia, speaking to the vampire's portrait, indicated that she knew neither of them could wait that long. Later, Julia comforted Vicky, who had grown fearful of being too caught up in the past. As the night went on, Barnabas came to Julia's room and prepared to strangle her. To his surprise, Julia was awake and had placed a dummy in her bed. She greeted Barnabas and stated that she had been waiting for him for a very long time (290).

In June of that year, Julia was forced to bring her medical expertise to the Collins family service. Her first in-house patient was Daphne Budd, the secretary to Collinwood matriarch, Elizabeth Collins Stoddard. Daphne had been walking home from work one evening when a vampire attacked her, leaving two gaping wounds upon her throat. Daphne was brought back to Collinwood where Julia administered care to her injuries. She discovered that a strange, unidentifiable cell had entered Daphne's bloodstream, slowly destroying her platelets. She described Daphne’s condition to the county sheriff, George Patterson. A few nights later, Elizabeth's daughter, Carolyn Stoddard, became another victim of a vampire attack. Julia examined her blood and discovered the presence of the same mysterious, destructive cell that she had found in Daphne’s blood. She presented her results to a family friend named Professor Timothy Eliot Stokes. Stokes suspected that the one responsible for attacking Daphne and Carolyn was a vampire. Julia had difficulty accepting Stokes’ theory, but knew the man well enough to know that he wasn’t given to whimsical bouts of speculation. Within a short while, Julia discovered that Stokes was correct. A distant relative of the Collins family – Barnabas Collins visited the venerable estate and Julia noticed that Barnabas failed to cast a reflection in the mirror of her compact. The following evening, Julia went to Barnabas' abode at the Old House. She told him that she knew that he was a vampire, and further – that she could possibly cure him. Barnabas was naturally skeptical and regarded Julia as a threat to his existence. However, she convinced him that through careful analysis of Daphne and Carolyn's blood samples, she could isolate and destroy the viral vampire cell. Julia prepared a serum and administered a series of injections to Barnabas over the course of several evenings. Miraculously it worked. Barnabas' blood-cravings began to subside and in a matter of days, he gained the ability to walk in the daylight for the first time in almost two hundred years. He still had a long way to go however, and Barnabas began to grow impatient. He wanted to rush the process along so that he could continue with his plans to court the Collins family governess, Maggie Evans. This revelation devastated Julia. She had fallen in love with Barnabas and hearing him pine after Maggie Evans was more than Julia could bear to hear. She deliberately sabotaged her serum and gave Barnabas his final injection. The altered serum had a traumatic effect on Barnabas' physiology. He began rapidly aging until he was little more than a gruesome, bald old man. He lunged at Julia screaming in a raspy voice, "You betrayed me!" Grabbing her by the throat, he strangled Julia until she fell over, dead.
