King Edward was the villanous ruler of the Veg-Heads, a group of vegetables brought to life thanks to poisoning from the Chemical Plant Zone. After emerging from the ground, Edward declared that the Plowright Zone now belonged to his people and captured Sonic the Hedgehog, Harry Mole and Farmer Nige. Sonic quickly escaped from his root bindings and King Edward made a break for it, running to the town centre. Unfortunately, he was caught by the townspeople and the ensuing mob called for the vegetables' heads, wishing to "boil" and "roast" them. • Like the other Veg-Heads, King Edward was originally an ordinary vegetable in the fields of Farmer Nige in the Plowright Zone, until he was mutated by toxic waste from the nearby and abandoned Chemical Plant Zone. This caused him to grow to great size, as well as develop legs, arms and a face. He led the Veg-Heads in an uprising to take over the Plowright Zone, managing to capture Farmer Nige, Sonic the Hedgehog and Harry Mole, although all three subsequently escaped.

While Sonic defeated the other Veg-Heads, King Edward himself was captured by the local farmers of the Plowright Zone, who wanted to boil or roast him. However, when the other Veg-Heads said that they had only been following King Edward's orders and that they would behave from now on, Farmer Nige agreed to give them their own section of land as long as they lived in peace. King Edward reluctantly agreed.
