Shortly after its inception, the Patriots were joined by Para-Medic, Sigint, Ocelot, and EVA. As time passed however, Big Boss and Zero developed differing interpretations of The Boss's wishes, culminating in Big Boss' departure from the organization. Zero lost his faith in humanity after this perceived betrayal, and constructed at the heart of the organization a cluster of AIs, which together ran the polititcs, economics, cultures and wars of the world. As the events of the Metal Gear timeline unfolded, Para-Medic and Sigint came to die, and EVA left the organization before being fatally injured in a motorcycle chase through Eastern Europe. Ocelot was overtaken by Liquid's psyche, and Zero became incapacitated by old age, leaving only the AIs in command of the Patriots. The organization's power in the world ended when Old Snake and Otacon destroyed the war-centric AI, GW, and ended Liquid Ocelot's Insurrection. However, the Patriots didn't truly die until Big Boss revealed the truth of the story, in its entirety to Old Snake, permanently removed Zero from his life support systems, and succumbed to the clutches of FOXDIE; permanently ending the cycle of violence begun by Colonel Volgin in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
