The Pokemon Anime: Sun & Moon series is the sucessor to the XY series. It is the sixth series of the anime and the series is nearly completely original with nearly no references to the Generation VII core series games, apart from the region and the regional Pokemon. Along with the Pokemon 20th anniversary, Sega decided to collaborate with the Pokemon Company and decided to put in Sonic characters as well, to also celebrate Sonic's 25th anniversary.

After the XY series, Ash Ketchum arrived in the new Alola region along with Pikachu and Serena, who decided to stay with Ash so she can see more of new Pokemon that the other regions never saw, though it's quite obvious, to her mother, her Pokemon, and Pikachu, that she stayed for other reason. They meet up with Ash's old rival, Gary, who decides to join Ash on their adventure. After they met the professor (Sonic the Hedgehog), Ash requests Sonic to go with, which Sonic agress, since his assistant is almost an understudy professor.
