First featured in the story "The Flying Smurf", he manages to put up with his master despite how much Gargamel abuses him. Azrael tends to realize beforehand that Gargamel's schemes will go awry, but reluctantly goes along with them anyway in hopes of possibly capturing a Smurf. However, he tends to get in the way of his master at times, resulting in Gargamel getting angry with his pet for his incompetence.

His attack nearly succeeded but he was eventually captured after an intense battle.
