The Galactic Republic military was turned, over night, into the Imperial military. The weaponry, technology, personnel and uniforms all remained the same. What did change was the ideology, mission and chain-of-command. Over the years, the Imperial military became infamous for its efficiency, discipline and brutality: hundreds of star systems fell to the wrath of the Galactic Empire, and with them, the lives of hundreds of billions of sentient beings. The Imperial military was watched on a constant basis by COMPNOR and its Imperial Security Bureau and CompForce observers, in order to keep the massive and powerful military in check in case of rebellion against the Emperor. The Stormtroopers fulfilled a similiar purpose, stationed aboard Imperial naval vessels and Army garrisons to serve as the fighting arm of the Emperor. In 4 ABY, the military was splintered during the Post-Endor Imperial power struggle. For four years, its strength and efficiency would drop to near disastrous levels, until its revival in 8 ABY by Emperor Bacharan Valak. While the Emperor is the undisputed master of the Empire and its military, the military itself is run by the Commander-in-Chief, the Military Executor and Supreme Commander of the Imperial Forces.
