- Alec Holland, a scientist working on a formula to "make forests out of deserts", was killed by a bomb. A nearby swamp creature (created as a defender of The parliament of Trees) absorbed all the memories and thoughts of Alec Holland, so he believed he was Alec Holland. He became the entity known as the Swamp Thing. He is married to Abigail Holland, and they have a daughter, Tefe Holland.

The newly conscious plant life formed a semblance of a human form and rose up from the bog as the Swamp Thing, the latest in a long line of Earth elementals created when The Green was in need of protection.
