Description
| - The games are set against a futuristic sci-fi backdrop where the basis for interstellar travel and civilization comes from mass effect physics. Humanity has discovered the ruins of an ancient spacefaring race called the Protheans on Mars and used the technology to explore the stars, coming across numerous alien races and learning to live with it.
The trilogy follows the story of Commander Shepard, the player character, who learns about the existence of a galactic threat called the Reapers and has the ultimate goal of stopping them. Mass Effect: Andromeda takes place in the titular galaxy, and features the struggles of player character Pathfinder Ryder. The games follow a linear overarching plot, but the ways in which to tackle presented challenges form the basis of the game experience.
Tremendous leeway is given to the player in mapping out the behavior of their character. The Shepard trilogy offers a dichotomous morality system keeps track of certain actions and may influence certain scenarios. Players can be morally upright paragons, vindictive/petty renegades, or somewhere in between. Through Save File Transfer, decisions can carry over across the trilogy, but only if the games are all on the same platform. Mass Effect: Andromeda tries its hand on a more naturalistic dialogue system where player choices fall on a wider spectrum than red or blue.
The two spin-off titles are shooters for mobile devices with elements from the main games. Galaxy, a top-down shooter, puts players in the shoes of Jacob Taylor, who like Shepard may choose which responses to give in conversations. Infiltrator, a third-person shooter, is about Randall Ezno, a Cerberus operative whose overall morality is the deciding factor in the game's final mission.
