At the beginning of Who Could That Be at This Hour?, Lemony Snicket goes to The Hemlock Tearoom and Stationery Shop with two V.F.D. chaperones, who, for unknown reasons, are pretending to be Lemony's parents. Lemony describes the tearoom as having floors that feel dirty even when they are clean. He also says the food is too awful to eat, especially the eggs. Their eggs are actually on display in the Museum of Bad Breakfast, a place for especially horrible breakfasts. They sell irreparable pens and paper, but Lemony does day that the tea served is tolerable. It is also situated across from the train station, so people waiting for a train may wait there. The shop also sells envelopes off racks.

The shop also sells envelopes off racks. The employees make Lemony ask where the bathroom is(It is down a small hallway), although they obviously can tell that a bathroom is what Lemony is looking for. It is a well known fact that the eggs are bad, as even the customers are sympathetic to anyone who eats the eggs. Bathroom includes a small tall window that only a child could fit through. Outside this window is a narrow puddly alley. The two people who tried having Snicket drink his tea were at first persumed to be his parents were actually V.F.D. agents who tried to drug Snicket in order to get him away from his chaperone. The teacups served at the Hemlock Tearoom have HEMLOCK written across the side of each.
