The Friends of Gillian are Forever Knight fans who "became" characters in the actual television series by having a namesake on the show. Usually, this happened in a script by Gillian Horvath, hence the name of the faction. However, the term is extended to include fans whose names were used for characters in episodes scripted by other writers. As Meredith put it in the Affiliations FAQ, "This the only non-voluntary and occasionally co-incidental affiliation."
