In the late 21st century, two giant floating structures were built over Manhattan, and floated over the docks. The purpose of these structures, called Stations, was to track all objects (planes, ships etc.) coming into the US through the East Coast. They were also used by the military and secret services for other purposes, there was a large section of 'Station 1' used as a launch pad for US Air-Force airships. Evacuation's soon began, and the staff of both Manhattan Stations were tasked with monitoring the meteor as it entered Earth's orbit. And by God, we better make the best out of it.
