Ferdinand "Jelly Roll" Morton was a jazz piano player born in 1800-something in New Orleans As a young lad he was able to pull himself up out of his ghetto lifestyle and get work as a professional piano player, but was unable to keep himself up by his bootstraps and died destitute in Los Angeles on July 16, 1941.
