As an amateur boxer in his hometown of Paterson, New Jersey, Costello won 32 straight fights before being knocked out. The loss ended his boxing career. Costello insisted that the money he and Bud Abbott earned from their comedy act be split 60/40, in Abbott's favor. Costello reasoned, "Comics are a dime a dozen. Good straight men are hard to find."
