The SHU (Secure Housing Unit) is a facility in Fox River where inmates who had misbehaved spend a while there like a month as punishment for their actions. Also, this is the place where Lincoln Burrows spends his prison days in death row. At different points in Season 1, Michael, Sucre, and Lincoln are in there at the same time.
