Like the majority of the Orbs, the Orb of Time was taken by the Cardassians during their occupation of Bajor. In 2373 the Detapa Council decided to return the Orb to the Bajorans and the USS Defiant was sent to collect it. They also picked up what they thought was a human stranded on Cardassia but was in fact a surgically alerted Klingon, Arne Darvin, who used the Orb to take the Defiant back in time hoping change the course of history by assassinating James T. Kirk to prevent him from foiling Darvin's operations in that timeframe. The crew of the Defiant were able to foil Darvin's plans before Kira Nerys was able to use the Orb to return to their own time.
