Four presidents were assassinated: * Abraham Lincoln was shot in the back of the head at Ford's Theater by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865. Lincoln died the next day. * James Garfield was shot in the spine by Charles Guiteau on July 2, 1881 in Maryland. The infection from the bullet caused him to have a heart attack and die September 19, eighty days after the shooting. * William McKinley was shot in the ribs and abdomen by Leon Czolgosz at a reception in Buffalo on September 6, 1901. He was to recovering and seemed likely to survive, but died suddenly on September 14. * John Kennedy was shot in the upper back, throat, and back of the head on November 22, 1963 by a person believed to be Lee Harvey Oswald. He was pronounced dead half an hour after the shooting.
